Jazz, jazz, and more jazz! : Friday night will be hoppin’ in the valley this weekend
If you are not lucky enough to have tickets to the 23rd annual B.R. Cohn Fall Music Festival this weekend, fear not as there is still plenty to do around the Sonoma Plaza. Jumping ahead to Sunday, Oct. 4, The Sonoma Valley Jazz Society will be hosting a “Thank You to Members & Sponsors” party with The Jackie Ryan Quartet. Doors will open at 4 p.m. at Wild Thyme Catering on Railroad Avenue in El Verano. Wild Thyme will provide a New Orleans themed dinner with a no host wine and beer bar. There is no cover for Sonoma Valley Jazz Society members and sponsors, and is also open to the public with couples receiving a discount. Call Janice at 707.373.0700 for reservations.
Sonoma Valley Jazz Society has other events to choose from this weekend as well. “Jazz in the Back” at The Plaza Bistro has The Miles Wick Quartet with Dayna Stephens of New York on saxophone, Jack Riordan on guitar, Smith Dobson on drums, and of course, Miles Wick on bass. At The Lodge at Sonoma, pianist Grant Levin will entertain listeners. Both shows are Friday, Oct. 2, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. with no cover. On Saturday, Oct. 3, The Jonathan Poretz Quartet will play at 7 p.m.
Sebastiani Winery is continuing their summer music series with not one but two great bands tonight, Friday, Oct. 2. Goldfinch will open the show at 7 p.m. They come to us from Tacoma, Wash. and bring with them some really unique folk rock. Following them is Bay Area band, Indian Valley Line. The show will be in the tasting room and goes until 9 p.m. There is no cover and listeners will receive the club member prices on wine.
Brian Nova, one of the hottest jazz musicians in town, will perform at the Schellville Grill this Friday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. Joining him to create the trio are Andrew Emer and KSVY’s own Bill Moody. Call 707.996.5151 for more details.
Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack has many offerings this weekend beginning with Karaoke with Emmy on Friday, Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 DJ Rumba 99 will spin for “Salsa Night” with the dancing beginning at 9 p.m. There is live music on the patio for brunch every weekend from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with this week’s entertainment being provided by Chechum & Friends on Sunday, Oct. 4.
It seems that a lot of this weekend’s music is happening on Friday and here’s yet another choice: The Sonoma Community Center will host The San Francisco Piano Quartet tonight, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by The Sonoma Classical Music Society and the performance is titled, “Six Degrees, Dvorak, Coming to America”. Murphy’s Irish Pub will provide bluegrass from Sonoma Mountain Band at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. On Saturday, Oct. 3, enjoy a mix of jazz age and Western Swing with Out of the Blue. Both of those shows are at 8 p.m. with no cover. On Sunday, Oct. 4, join or simply listen to an acoustic Celtic Music Jam Session. That starts at 6 p.m. For more information call 707.935.0660.
Later Sunday night, Oct. 4, The Blue Moon Saloon hosts their weekly open blues jam. Local musicians join in with the house band led by Phil Herrschaft. The jam begins around 9:30 p.m. every Sunday and has become a favorite haunt of many local music celebrities.
Finally, Sonoma recording artist, Natasha James will be performing at a benefit for breast cancer awareness. This is a free show and is all ages on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. at The Russian River Brewing Company on Fourth Street in Santa Rosa. Call 707.545.2337 for all of the details.
