Take a musical journey back in time this weekend

The American Legion Jack London Post 489 invites you to attend Dance for the Troops this Saturday, Oct 24 at The Sonoma Veterans Building.  The event takes place from 5-11 p.m. and during that time there will be dance lessons, a “fund-a-need” auction, dancing with pin-up girls, prizes for best costume, and of course dancing.  The fabulous Fondettes will be performing their ‘40s style music reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters and big band music will be playing from The Richard Olsen Orchestra.  At the door, drop off a hand written not of support which will be sent to the troops.  They will also be collecting donations of food, clothing, and personal items.  A complete list of suggested care package items can be found on their website at www.sonomaops.org.  Tickets can be purchased at Steiners Tavern, Chico’s Clothing Store, Pharmaca and Readers’ Books.  All proceeds will fund care packages to the troops.  For more information call 707.935.9018.
Other local musicians invite you to travel back to another time.  The 40th anniversary of Woodstock will be celebrated in Golden Gate Park at Speedway Meadows this Sunday, Oct 25 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Narada Michael Walden featuring Vernon Ice Black will lead 3,000 guitar players including Sonoma’s own, Jon Popenoe, attempting to break the world record for the largest guitar ensemble playing Purple Haze.  This is in honor of Jimi Hendrix who headlined Woodstock in 1969.  Also performing that day will be Michael Hinton with Joli Valenti.  They will be on the East Stage at 2:40 p.m.  The rest of the event will include 42 bands, 3 stages, and 26 poster artists as well as a tipi village, green festival activities, and a kids’ zone.  The event is free but can also be streamed online at www.2b1records.com.
Jon Popenoe will also be playing with his band tonight, Friday, Oct 23 in the Barrel Room at Sebastiani Winery.  That show is at 7 p.m. with no cover.
After a two year break, local band The Cavemen will be playing a reunion show at the El Verano Inn Friday, Oct 23 at 9 p.m.   Also reuniting for a special pre-Halloween show is Dirvish featuring J.B. Duff and Byron Burt.  They will be playing the Barking Dog Roasters in the Sonoma Marketplace on Wednesday, Oct 28 at 5 p.m.  Weather permitting they will perform outside in the gazebo.  Costumes are encouraged.  For more on Halloween activities, make sure to check back for next week’s column.
