Spikers win NCS opener before falling to top-seeded Miramonte

After opening the NCS Division III volleyball playoffs with a four-set win over visiting Terra Linda, the Sonoma Lady Dragons were eliminated from post-season play Saturday night in Orinda, falling to top-seeded Miramonte in a three-set match 25-27, 4-25 and 27-29.
The Lady Dragons finished the season with a 20-13 mark, and finished third in the Sonoma County League. Five seniors played their last games under the direction of coach Mindy Neves including  Sophia Somers, Kendall Smith, Lauren Fisher, Sofia Ziemienski and Emily Hawing.
Miramonte (26-2, champions of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League) advanced to the NCS Division III semifinals
Against Terra Linda the lady Dragons won the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-21, respectively, before dropping the third set 18-25. The lady Dragon closed out the match with a 26-24 fourth-set victory.
Sophomore Jersey Witous had 38 assists in the win over Terra Linda and Somers had 11 kills in the match.
In the loss to Miramonte Witous again had a solid game with 27 assists and Lauren Fisher had 20 digs. Somers had 11 kills and Kendal Smith had 10 kills.
Other members of the2009 Lady Dragons roster included juniors Kaylee Vollert, Molly Lyons and Krysta Young and sophomores Rebecca Stone, Suzanne Amaral and Karly Burningham.
