Dragon baseball squads off to successful start

Ray Sullivan Jr. | Sonoma Valley Sun

All three levels of Sonoma Dragon baseball initiated play last weekend, and all three teams had successful debuts
.
Don Lyons’ varsity squad took advantage of some timely offense and seven Washington High School (San Francisco) errors to pick up a 6-0 opening day win on Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field.

Senior Jeremy Branconi got the win (1-0), yielding just two hits in 4 1/3 innings. Branconi got relief help from seniors Charlie Watson and Marcus Amantite and junior Alec Berthoud as the trio combined to get the final eight outs.

Only two Dragon runs were plated via hits, the rest coming as a result of Washington’s fielding woes. Seniors Kris Patrick (2-4) and Tyler Rose (3-4) each drove in a run and combined for five of the Dragons nine hits. Rose also stole three bases as the Dragons combined to swipe five bags on the afternoon.

Senior Stephen Brooks was the only other player with multiple hits (2-3) and had the Dragons only extra base hit, a double. The rest of the Dragon offensive attack was led by junior Dylan Pritel (1-3) and senior Marcus Amantite (1-1).

The JV Dragons, once again guided by Fred Fegan, posted positive results from their scrimmage vs. Maria Carrillo. Pitchers Mike Hernandez (64 pitches in 3 1/3 inn) and Eamon Shine (27 pitches in 1 and 2/3’s innings) were effective in their first live innings of work. Fegan emphasized that his young pitching staff is “just building arm strength right now.”
At the plate, Dragon’s started fast; following an error and a base on balls, Shine drove in some runs with an opposite field hit and Sean Daly made an RBI out. Will Murphy, Ryan Mateo and Sam Keechler each contributed with a hit.

Also on Saturday, San Francisco’s Washington Eagles Soph-Frosh team was defeated by the Sonoma Valley freshman baseball team 11-2.

Brennan Cole the Dragon’s starting pitcher and lead-off hitter left the game in the top of the first with an injured ankle but three Sonoma pitchers; Jonah Son, Jaxson Strong and Cody Oaks combined to hold the Eagle’s to a single hit over seven innings.
