Don’t stop believing – Journey to hit Sonoma Valley
Tickets went on sale this past Tuesday, May 26 for the 23rd Annual B.R. Bohn Charity Events Fall Music Festival & Celebrity Golf Classic to take place this October 3 and 4. Not only will regulars The Doobie Brothers be in town, but this year they are to be joined by Journey as well as Little Feat, Pablo Cruise, and others. This will be Journey’s first ever performance at the Cohn Amphitheater. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster and at the winery. Call 707.938.4064, ext. 127 for more details.
The silver screen will translate to song this weekend as The Sonoma Valley Chorale presents “Reel Music.” Favorites from the cinema such as Over the Rainbow, As Time Goes By, Moon River and more will be performed at the Veteran’s Memorial Building Saturday, May 30 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 31 for an afternoon show at 2 p.m. For more info call 707.935.1576. Purchasing tickets in advance is recommended.
The Jazz + tent may be a thing of the past, but jazz has not left town, thanks to the Sonoma Valley Jazz Society. Tonight, May 29, there are two options. “Jazz in the Back” at the Plaza Bistro brings the Peter Welker Sextet with vocalist Jeff Oster. At the Lodge at Sonoma in the Gallery Lounge, enjoy pianist Wayne De La Cruz. Also at the Gallery Lounge on Saturday, May 30, jazz vocalist Kenny Washington will perform with Larry Dunlap on piano. All shows are from 7-10 p.m. with no cover. A little out of the way in pleasant downtown Healdsburg, Glen Ellen jazz pianist Stephanie Ozer will be performing as headliner at the 11th Annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival. Her quartet performs Sunday afternoon, May 31. For the schedule call 800.838.3006.
Mondo American Beer Garden brings BackTrax with a spin to their unplugged show. They’re plugging in the bass and bringing an electric drum set in addition to the usual 6- and 12-string acoustics. This unique show starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 30.
The 2nd annual music festival to benefit the Sonoma Community Center was a big hit this past weekend, but as I’ve said before, that doesn’t slow down Murphy’s Irish Pub. Friday, May 29, Spiral Mystics will be performing music from Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and more. The Keystone Crossing Trio will present songs of the brother duos from country and bluegrass on Saturday, May 30. Both nights the show starts at 8 p.m. On Sunday, May 31, the weekend wraps up with singer/songwriter Pete Olson at 6 p.m.
Performing the final show of the spring at the El Dorado Kitchenette tonight, Friday May 29, is one of my personal local favorites, Adam Traum. He will perform roots music and Americana from 6- 8:30 p.m. Keep an eye on The Sonoma Valley Sun for news of the Kitchenette’s musical reopening after the end of summer. And as one door, or rather, venue closes, another shall open. Enjoy the “Garden Party” at Saddles Restaurant Fridays at 4:30 p.m. This week enjoy barbeque on the Veranda Garden with music from The Tri-Tip Trio. For more information call 707.938.2929.
Little Switzerland is hosting DJ Aca-Style at 9 p.m. Friday, May 29. On Saturday, May 30 enjoy Dixieland Swing from The Gold Coast Jazz Band from 1-4 p.m. And The Krische Band will perform live music on Sunday, May 31 from 5 p.m. on. All have different covers, so call 707.938.9990 for details.
New and noteworthy, Nigel Armstrong, a 19-year-old virtuoso violinist from Sonoma, will be performing at Andrews Hall at the Sonoma Community Center. Sonoma Classical Music Society is presenting this exciting musician on Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Readers’ Books, Pharmaca, or at the door.
Cat Smith can be found on KSVY 91.3 Sonoma and SVTV cable channel 27, every Friday with Ken Brown on Mornings in Sonoma and Community Conversations.
